Feed Makers Reject Brazil Soymeal
(Adds quotes, detail)
SEOUL, Feb 20 (Reuters) - South Korea's feed makers have received Brazil soymeal with low protein solubility, rejecting one cargo and claiming compensation on another, traders said on
Monday.
They said protein solubility of at least two Brazil soymeal cargoes so far was below the required 70 percent.
Animals have difficulties in digesting such feed.
But traders said the problem would be limited as it might have emerged from processing, rather than represent a problem with the crop itself.
"Last week, the
Korea Feed Association rejected 55,000 tonnes of Brazil soymeal from
Cargill," a trader in Seoul said.
Protein solubility of the shipment, which arrived on Friday, was only 50-60 percent, traders said.
Other traders said South Korean feed makers early this month had learned that Brazil soymeal in another cargo, which arrived in late January, had black-coloured soymeal due to over-processing.
The Korea Feed Association had claimed compensation from a firm that had already been paid for about 50,000 tonnes of Brazil soymeal, they added.
The Korea Feed Association did not confirm the second case but an official at the association said it would meet on Tuesday to discuss the next steps it should take.
"I cannot give details but we will have a special meeting tomorrow with KFA members," an official at the association said.
Another trader said: "I don't believe this means all soymeal from Brazil has problems. Processing in a plant might have reduced protein solubility."
